crafting systems, building products, empowering people

Joa Ebert

I wrote my first lines of code at eight years old. Nobody asked me to but I was curious and from that moment on I just couldn't stop. That was about of my life ago and the passion is still there. I studied mathematics at sixteen, spent my evenings building neural networks in C++ at eighteen and dropped out of university to sleep on a couch in Paris for a startup job. No regrets ✌️

Since then I gave talks at international tech conferences, co-founded products used by millions, grown engineering teams from scratch, had two successful exits and helped build infrastructure that major broadcast organizations depend on live, under pressure.

I also won numerous design awards somewhere along the way, which matters to me because I think software that works well should also feel right to use.

When I moved back to my hometown at the Teutoburger Forest I started to teach teenagers algorithmic problem solving skills and AI fundamentals. I also started doing pro bono consulting for the local startup scene.

Work

Distributed Systems

  • Designed and patented a live video router in the cloud, used by major broadcast organizations worldwide and the highest profile esports tournaments.
  • Contributed to infrastructure operating at 99.9999% uptime for mission-critical live video delivery
  • Currently focused on distributed monitoring, ML-based observability and automation at scale
  • Built self-healing, resilient autonomous systems at scale

Engineering Leadership

  • CTO at Make.TV starting 2016; acquisition by LTN Global Inc.
  • Strong believer in Servant Leadership principles
  • Scaled early-stage startup to 20+ developers across multiple time zones
  • Introduced SRE and DevOps practices in multiple organizations
  • Navigated two acquisitions from the engineering side
  • Ability to identify, hire and keep top talent
  • Currently working across architecture, distributed systems, and engineering culture

Product & UI/UX

  • Co-founded Audiotool: a browser-based DAW with millions of users
  • Strong instinct for product development and user experience
  • Red Dot Award, German Design Award winner, and others

Compilers, VMs & Language Runtimes

  • Co-founded Defrac: Java bytecode compiler with SSA optimization pipeline targeting iOS, Android, and the web; acquired by Make.TV
  • LLVM-based AOT compiler and runtime for Java bytecode targeting native and WASM using a Sea-of-Nodes IR
  • Applied VM and compiler principles to broadcast infrastructure for scalable cloud deployments
  • Flash bytecode optimization tooling, including a transpiler of shader bytecode

AI & Machine Learning

  • Real-time object recognition system, 2005: C++, no GPU, no frameworks
  • Robotics via scholarship, 2004
  • ML-based anomaly detection and predictive incident management in production
  • Expert systems for incident response using decision tree learning
  • Distributed agent harness with hierarchical task supervision

Community

  • Conference speaker at jsconf.eu, FITC and others
  • Taught algorithmic problem solving and AI to teenagers at a local school, pro bono
  • Pro bono technology consulting for local startups
